Memory care Communities

Memory Care communities are communities are a specialized kind of assisted living designed to provide the optimized care for individuals with progressive diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia may need.

Individuals with memory disorders often pace, or wander. While they need to move around, they can also easily become disoriented. In memory care communities, the floor plans are designed for wandering without getting lost. The exit doors are alarmed and require a code for entering and exiting the building, enabling residents the freedom to move around the building safely.

In memory care communities, staff are on hand 24 hours a day, and are trained to handle the needs of dementia patients. The activities are designed to keep residents active with the abilities of the residents in mind. There are often activity stations designed to meet the interests of the residents. Common dementia issues such as wandering around, high levels of activity at night, and other challenges are expected and staff are comfortable with redirection and comforting residents who are exhibiting confusion.  Memory care buildings often have secured courtyards that residents can enjoy, enabling them to be outdoors safely.

Memory care communities provide more structure than traditional assisted living. Residents are not expected to manage their own time, or plan for their needs. While residents are not mandated to participate in activities, they are encouraged. Staff ensure residents are getting to meals, and helping residents manage daily hygiene.

Individuals with dementia are often prone to falls.  Many on the communities have motion detectors that will indicate if a resident gets out of bed or is moving around their apartment. This alerts staff to a possible need or fall.

Memory care communities can provide a safe and fulfilling living situation for those dealing with memory loss.
