The term “Independent Living” covers a wide range of senior housing options. It can refer to senior apartments, patio homes, or apartment style communities that provide meals and activities.
In a senior apartment or patio home community, a resident will do their own cooking and cleaning. There are common areas for social opportunities, and services can be brought in to assist a senior with chores or medical needs, there is no regular staff who are assigned to assist in the senior’s apartment.
An Independent Living Community provides a more “resort style” lifestyle. Full time on site staff provide housekeeping, shopping trips, transportation, activities, and meals. These communities are typically very active with scheduled activities that range from outings to exercise classes to book clubs and happy hours. Transportation options for errands and appointments are available at these communities as well.
Independent Living communities provide the feel of a vacation, while still offering the safety and security many seniors need. Residents will have access to an emergency call system that would alert staff if anything unexpected, such as a fall, were to happen.
Many Independent Living communities have home health and home care services available to the residents. These services can work with a resident to provide additional assistance with things like bathing and medications, if needed.
