Home Care Services
There are two types of home care services. There are Home Health Services, which are services provided in the home by medical staff for a medical need, and Home Care Services, which are non-medical services provided in the home to assist with everyday activities. This can be confusing for families who are looking for assistance in the home.
Home Health Care services are medical services that assist a senior with medical needs. These services are prescribed by a physician. If a person has had a hospital stay or has been in a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation after a hospitalization, they will likely go home with home health services. These services may be nursing visits to monitor a chronic illness or care for a severe wound, or it may be physical, occupational, or speech therapy services that are provided in the home. This type of home care is provided when there is a medical need, and this is typically covered by medical insurance when a person is considered home bound due to an injury or illness.
Non-medical home care services are non-medical services that provide in home assistance with everyday activities. Home care services can provide an individual assistance with dressing, bathing, grooming, and other daily activities. Caregivers can also assist with meals, housekeeping, and errands. These are often referred to as “private duty” services, or “companion” services. Home care services vary in the services provided. There are home care companies who focus on memory loss and improving cognition, while others focus on improving physical wellness through exercise. Other services focus on the relationships built between the caregiver and the client, and match caregivers to the client to ensure quality companionship.
The services available vary widely between companies. For instance, there are some home care companies who will provide transportation to appointments, and some will assist a client with grocery shopping by driving and accompanying the client, while others do not offer any transportation services.
